Treeleg padded into the empty ShadowClan nursery. Her belly was swollen and growing each day. Each day the queen grew more excited. She had always dreamed of kits. The only thing was that her kit's father, her mate, was a rouge. He disapeared yesterday. After hearing of the kits. Treeleg settled down into a nest long since used. Treeleg curled up and looked around her new den. Soon to be her den as well as her kits.

Darkstar slipped into the nursery after Treeleg. He sat down a little ways away from her, solemnly. The black tom nodded. "How are your kits?" he asked, his tone, nor his eyes, giving away no information or emotion. It was his duty to see to the camp, therefore he must also see to the kits. "I trust they, and yourself, are well."
Darkstar wondered who and where Treeleg's mate was. He had, apparently, disappeared, although Darkstar was not sure why. But he was a rogue, and if he had not disappeared, he would have been driven out.
Of course, Darkstar thought. That's why he left.

Treeleg looked at Darkstar. "Hello Darkstar. I will be able to tell you how my kits are when they are born. As long as my belly is swollen and I am healthy I asume they are to," she purred. Treeleg wondered where her brother, mate, and father were. Was her brother still Nightpaw? Was her mate still alive?

Darkstar smiled. "I'm glad to hear that, Treeleg." He glanced around. "Still empty in here? We'll have to get some more kits sometime." He nodded judgingly to Treeleg. "Treeleg..." Darkstar hesitated. It is my duty to know everything that goes on in my Clan. he told himself stubbornly. "Would you mind telling me who your mate is?" Darkstar waited with bated breath, although his face still told nothing of his emotions.

Treeleg nodded at the fact that the nursery needed more queens and kits. When Darkstar asked who her mate had been her fur bristled. "Well... a loner," Treeleg stutered and then hung her head. "His name was...." Treeleg's voice broke off. How could she tell of who her mate was! Their love was forrbiden.

Darkstar looked curiously at Treeleg. A loner? Better than rogue. They wouldn't have to run him off their territory. So why did he leave?
Darkstar shook the thought from his mind with a twitch of his tail and whiskers. Could he promise the queen that she would not be punished if she told him who her mate was? No, Darkstar thought. The whole thing is up to the warriors and Clan members. If they want to punish her, what can I do? I suppose she shouldn't tell me...
BUT I REALLY WANT TO KNOW! The thought blasted through Darkstar's head, and his eyes filled with rage for a second. Then they peacefully became normal as Darkstar regained perfect control of his body. It was a good argument, the punishment one. Darkstar had to put his Clan before his own needs.
But which would better serve the Clan?
Darkstar didn't know. He remained silent, offering Treeleg the chance to speak, or to remain silent.

"Darkstar?" Treeleg inquired when the clan leader remained silent. "I miss him. I have no clue where he ended up. A dead loner or a live one. He could be a kittypet for all I know!!" the queen blurted out. She began to cry. She wanted he kits to grow up with a father!

Darkstar looked down at the crying queen, and inwardly sighed. "Be strong for your kits, Treeleg," he murmured. "There is always someone you will miss. It is not life if there are no sad parts." He shook his head, and inwardly sighed again. "He is most likely alive. Loners know how to take care of themselves." He looked concernedly at the queen. "Loners are called so because they do not wish for too much company. He will always be there."

Treeleg looked up at her leader. He was right. Her mate had asked her if she would leave her clan to go with him. He had said she was the only cat he would ever need. "I must be strong for my kits sake. Thanks," the she-cat purred. "I can't wait for the birth of my kits!" Treeleg suddenly cheered up.

Darkstar nodded, allowing his happiness to shine through his face. He held some of it back, but he knew that the Clan could not be unhappy, as it would be a horrible downfall. "I'm sure they will be just as strong as you are, and as keen and good-natured," Darkstar purred confidently. "And the whole Clan congratulates you." Darkstar was filled with triumph, because he had managed to make a Clanmate happy. He had been doing that for a while, but still had that happy, warm, fuzzy feeling whenever he did it. The black tom nodded to her, and sat quietly for a while.

Treeleg saw and sensed how good Darkstar felt. "They will be perfect. Surley a strong addition to the clan," Treeleg purred confidently.

Darkstar purred. "Of course. And will be greeted by all the Clan, strong and wonderful." The tom's eyes shone. "They will be perfect."
He was not thinking of the good they would do as themselves, but the good they would do for the Clan. They would be warriors, just like all the rest, unless one became a medicine cat apprentice. They would be treated with equal respect as the others. But no sensible cat would say that in front of a queen.

Treeleg's tail twitched. She sensed something beneath the leader's words. "I know. They will be normal warriors. As every other cat. One might be a medicine cat apprentice. Nothing more though," the queen sighed slightly. "But they will be my kits! Share my strength as well as......their father's," Treeleg spoke with ferocity and confidence until she stumbled apon the last words.

Darkstar stared at Treeleg. "They will have the strength of the Clan. No one could say better. And they will have their father's will to live." The ShadowClan leader encouraged the queen, but began to wish that she would stop sensing his feelings. I work so hard to appear completely calm, he hissed in his mind. Still his features showed nothing, and this time Darkstar made sure that he felt completely calm, and happy, as he thought that.

Treeleg purred with pleasure. She loved kits. Soon she would have her own kits. The ShadowClan queen looked at Darkstar. "Did you ever have a mate or kits?" she asked him.
